26-Year-Old Influencer Dies by Suicide During Live Stream After Severe Fan Backlash

10:30, August 11

K-pop influencer Mina Chan, known online as sweeter_nk, has passed away at the age of 26. The tragedy occurred early in the morning on August 5 during a shocking TikTok live stream. The cause of suicide was an unrelenting wave of hate and harassment from fans of the popular boy band ENHYPEN.

The Japanese blogger, who lived in South Korea, was a prominent figure in the fandom. She ran a popular fan account, regularly attended concerts and fansigns, and openly supported the Japanese member of the group, Ni-ki.

Tension surrounding the influencer had been building for weeks following an incident at a US concert in late July. During the performance, Mina tried to pass flowers to Ni-ki through another member of the group, Sunoo. The gesture sparked a wave of criticism, with people accusing her of trying to steal the spotlight and ruining the atmosphere of the show.

Fuel was added to the fire by the artist himself. On July 30, Ni-ki held a broadcast on the Weverse platform where he criticized the concert etiquette of certain attendees. Although the blogger's name was not explicitly mentioned, the singer condemned fans who prioritize personal attention from artists over the performance itself, which triggered a new round of bullying directed at Mina.

Under public pressure, the influencer published a lengthy letter of apology on X (formerly Twitter). In it, she confessed that due to her frequent attendance at fan meetings, she had "lost touch with reality" and started believing she was closer to the group members than she actually was.

According to the South Korean news agency Yonhap, the police received an emergency call at 5:33 AM on August 5 reporting that the young woman was attempting suicide during a TikTok live stream.

On August 6, the victim's younger sister confirmed the tragic news via Instagram Stories, asking the public and media to honor the memory of the kind-hearted and caring woman and to refrain from spreading unnecessary details. Currently, the Yongsan Police Station in Seoul is investigating to determine all the circumstances surrounding the incident.
