Three decades later, one of the most high-profile and enigmatic unsolved murders in popular music history has finally reached trial. Jury selection has begun in Las Vegas for the murder trial of legendary rapper Tupac Shakur, with opening statements scheduled for August 17, according to the BBC.
In the dock is 63-year-old former street gang leader Duane "Keffe D" Davis. He is charged with murder using a deadly weapon, committed to advance or facilitate the activities of a criminal enterprise. Davis has pleaded not guilty; if convicted, he faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The tragedy took place on September 7, 1996, in Las Vegas. That evening, Tupac Shakur and Death Row Records boss Suge Knight attended a boxing match between Mike Tyson and Bruce Seldon at the MGM Grand hotel. After the fight, cameras captured the rapper and his entourage beating Orlando Anderson, an alleged member of the South Side Compton Crips gang.
Approximately three hours later, while Shakur was riding in the passenger seat of a BMW driven by Knight, a white Cadillac pulled up alongside them and opened fire. Tupac was struck four times and died six days later.
The killing occurred against the backdrop of a fierce East Coast vs. West Coast hip-hop rivalry and ongoing street wars between the Bloods and Crips gangs. Prosecutors believe Duane Davis—who is the uncle of the late Orlando Anderson—was the mastermind and organizer of the execution, convinced that the shooting was retaliation for the beating of his nephew.
The Key Evidence: The Defendant’s Own Book
For decades, the case remained unsolved due to a street code of silence and witnesses' unwillingness to cooperate with the police. However, in the mid-2000s, during an investigation into the murder of Notorious B.I.G. (Biggie Smalls), Los Angeles police caught up with Davis. At the time, he claimed to have been in the car during Tupac's murder, striking a deal with law enforcement in exchange for immunity from prosecution.
The situation changed dramatically when Davis breached the terms of that agreement. He co-authored a book titled Compton Street Legend, in which he openly stated that he was in that very vehicle and personally handed the weapon to the shooter. Davis also gave numerous public interviews savoring the details of the crime, which "breathed new life" into the Las Vegas police investigation.
In 2023, police raided Davis's home and subsequently arrested him. The defense insists that the memoirs were partially fabricated for commercial success and book sales, with the defendant himself stating in a recent interview: "I didn’t write that book, a ghostwriter wrote it."
Star Witnesses and the Scale of the Trial
The trial promises to be unprecedented in its intensity and scope. An impressive list of potential prosecution witnesses features more than 200 names, including Sean "Diddy" Combs—whom Davis previously claimed in interviews had allegedly offered him a million dollars to kill Tupac and Suge Knight (Combs has consistently denied any involvement).
Legal experts are calling the upcoming trial a "Super Bowl for legal scholars." If Davis decides to testify in person, the court will have to determine where promotional boasting ends and a real confession to one of the 20th century's most notorious crimes begins.
