A new cultural conflict is brewing in the United States against the backdrop of the largest wealth transfer in history: over the next two decades, approximately $124 trillion will pass from the baby boomer generation to their children, writes The Post.
However, amidst this trillion-dollar wealth, a growing number of adult children from affluent families are openly complaining that their wealthy parents refuse to share their money here and now—whether it is buying an apartment, paying for acting classes, or helping with rent, writes NYP.
Many children raised in wealthy families do not understand the logic of parents who hoard millions but refuse to support them during their formative years.
Jason (name changed), a 38-year-old comedian from New York: His father recently inherited millions, yet regularly denies his son modest requests—such as paying for a $600 improv course or buying a plane ticket to Los Angeles for an important audition. The father justifies this by claiming that after his death, his son "will never have to work again." “Why wait until I’m 60? Help me now, while it can actually change my life,” the man resents.
Ashley (name changed), a 43-year-old New Yorker: She is still resentful toward her parents for not buying her a condo apartment after they sold their own property, even though they were well aware of the tax breaks. “Yes, it sounds selfish, but it’s true. They were too focused on themselves and felt that since they paid for my college and wedding, that was it,” she admits.
Most wealthy parents and financial experts hold the diametrically opposite view. They believe that financial isolation builds character and teaches self-reliance.
“Money poured onto an unprepared life doesn't strengthen the foundation; it masks weaknesses. I'd rather watch my children struggle, adapt, and succeed on their own than pave over every obstacle in their path,” says Rich Kingly, a Texas businessman.
Professional financial consultants agree. According to private wealth experts, parents often worry that easy money will breed deep dependence in their children and strip them of their ambition. Furthermore, endless small loans to children often quietly undermine the retirement plans of the elderly parents themselves.
However, not all parents withhold money out of principle—sometimes life takes a different turn. A striking example is the story of 43-year-old Bliss Bendell, who grew up in luxury in Manhattan with a family home in the Hamptons, horses, and unlimited credit cards in her youth.
However, when her parents grew older, everything changed. Her mother developed Alzheimer's disease, and her father faced severe health problems and a loss of earning capacity. The pandemic and astronomical bills for medical care and long-term care completely exhausted the family's savings. “There was no money left at all, and it was a total shock,” shares Bliss, whose life was turned upside down. “I always thought my father had everything under control. I guess he just didn't plan on living this long.”
