Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker have opened up for the first time about the serious pregnancy complication that required their son Rocky to undergo surgery before he was born. According to the couple, doctors were literally fighting to save their baby’s life.
They shared the story in the documentary Travis Barker: Louder Than Fear. At the time, Barker was on tour in Europe when Kardashian called him.
“Travis, I went to the doctor, and the baby’s lungs are filling with fluid,” the musician recalled her telling him.
Doctors decided to perform an in-utero procedure. To remove the fluid from the baby’s lungs, they had to insert a needle through Kardashian’s abdomen. For the reality star, it was an extremely frightening experience.
“It was scary going into surgery,” Kardashian admitted.
Barker canceled four shows and immediately flew back to be with his wife in the hospital. The couple’s fear was especially intense because of a previous tragedy. Before Rocky was born, they had lost a baby.
The couple revealed that in 2021 they were expecting a baby girl and planned to name her Tulip. But during a routine checkup in the third month of pregnancy, doctors discovered that the baby’s heartbeat had stopped.
“When we lost the baby, we were devastated. We just lay in bed and cried for days,” Kardashian recalled.
Afterward, Kardashian made several attempts to become pregnant again through IVF. She went through five unsuccessful cycles and three egg retrieval procedures before deciding to stop. She later became pregnant naturally.
Rocky was born in November 2023. He is now two years old. For Barker, his birth was not only a long-awaited joy but also an opportunity to experience fatherhood with a young child again. Kardashian said that having Rocky gave her husband “another chance to do what he loves most and what he does best — be a dad.”
