Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodríguez kept their wedding so private that, according to Portuguese media, the footballer’s mother and siblings found out about the ceremony just half a minute before it began, the Daily Mail reports.
The couple officially married on August 11 at their new mansion, reportedly worth around £30 million, near Lisbon. Only four witnesses and the couple’s children attended the intimate civil ceremony.
Ronaldo’s mother, Dolores Aveiro, as well as his siblings Hugo, Elma and Katia, were not present at the wedding. According to Portuguese television presenter Cristina Ferreira, the family may have learned about the upcoming ceremony just seconds before Ronaldo and Rodríguez exchanged their vows.
“This is going to cause a lot of problems because the family wasn’t there. They weren’t even supposed to know. And if they did know, it was 30 seconds beforehand,” Ferreira said on the program Dois às 10.
Host Cláudio Ramos, however, urged viewers not to jump to conclusions, noting that assumptions about the family’s relationships are largely based on what the public sees on social media.
Ronaldo’s mother did publicly congratulate the couple. After the wedding was announced, Dolores left a heart emoji under her son’s post. His sister Katia, who is currently in Madeira, did the same.
The witnesses at the ceremony were Georgina’s sister Ivana Rodríguez, Ronaldo’s longtime friend Miguel Paixão, and Spanish couple José Rodríguez Sangil and Mónica González Martínez. According to Portuguese media, José works in the jewelry business.
The ceremony took place at 1:30 p.m. at Ronaldo and Rodríguez’s mansion in the upscale Quinta da Marinha area. Registrar Maria Manuel Ferreira de Campos Folhadela de Oliveira traveled from Porto specifically to officiate the marriage.
The couple also signed a prenuptial agreement the day before the wedding. According to the documents, they agreed to maintain separate ownership of assets acquired before the marriage. The agreement was signed on August 10, one day before the ceremony.
Ronaldo and Rodríguez married exactly one year after announcing their engagement. The couple had previously been together for nearly a decade and were raising five children.
Following the wedding, the newlyweds returned to Saudi Arabia, where Ronaldo continues to play for Al Nassr.
