Charles Aznavour’s music has once again proved that true hits never go out of style. Les plus belles chansons (“The Most Beautiful Songs”), a compilation by the legendary French-Armenian chansonnier, has officially been certified gold in France. The certification was awarded by the National Syndicate of Phonographic Publishing (SNEP).
Released on September 26, 2025, the album surpassed the threshold of 50,000 equivalent sales required for gold certification in France.
Nearly a year after its release, the achievement is particularly telling. Aznavour has been gone for several years, yet his songs continue to be played, sold and discovered by new generations of listeners. At a time when musical hits can sometimes spend just a few weeks on the charts, Aznavour’s catalog continues to play by its own rules.
Les plus belles chansons is more than another collection of familiar hits. Its release was made possible in part by the artist’s family archives. Aznavour’s relatives provided Universal Music with rare recordings, some of which had never previously been available to the public.
Among the biggest surprises were three previously unreleased songs. One of them is Que c'est joli, Venise (“How Beautiful Venice Is”), a kind of musical response to Aznavour’s famous song Que c'est triste, Venise (“How Sad Venice Is”).
Philippe Zouari, who oversees Aznavour’s catalog, told French media that the singer was incredibly prolific and continued writing music almost constantly. At times, he even created new songs as creative responses to his own earlier works.
The compilation brings together some of Aznavour’s most iconic songs, including La Bohème, Emmenez-moi and Hier encore, as well as rare collaborations. Among them are recordings with Dalida and Ray Charles.
The release was also made available in physical formats, including CD and collectible vinyl. At the same time, the album is available on streaming platforms.
It was the combination of physical sales and digital streaming that allowed the compilation to reach the threshold required for gold certification.
