The X-Files star Gillian Anderson has shared rare insights into her personal life. In a new interview with The Sunday Times, the 58-year-old actress opened up candidly about a romantic relationship with a girl during her school years and how difficult it was for her to navigate her own sexuality.

According to Gillian, who moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan, from London at the age of 11, one of her first serious infatuations was a romance with an older high school girl. "It felt secret, illicit, wrong, and we had to hide," the actress recalled. "Later, I had a boyfriend who found out about it and dumped me."

Anderson admitted that back then she simply "didn't have the language" for her feelings. "I also had boyfriends, so I didn't think I was gay. But I definitely felt like I didn't have the terminology for it. Even later, when I had other relationships [with women], I'm not sure I ever looked at them as potentially forever."

The actress also added that in her youth, she viewed such romances as something temporary: "When I was younger, parts of my brain thought that [women] were a phase."

Anderson has always been open about her tumultuous past. She recalled how, as early as age 12, she used fake ID to get into gay bars and dance. Later, at 15, she entered into a three-year relationship with a 24-year-old man.

The actress has been married twice (to Clyde Klotz and Julian Ozanne) and has had several high-profile romances, including a multi-year relationship with The Crown creator Peter Morgan. Anderson has three children: a daughter, Piper, and sons Oscar and Felix.

Reflecting on modern views of love, the actress noted: "The person who I consider to be my life partner happens to be a man, but I think I would have felt the same way if it had been a woman. I would have thought, 'This is my life partner.'"
