She Cut Off Her Husband’s Penis and Threw It Into a Field: The Scandalous Story of Lorena Bobbitt Is Coming to Hulu

11:18, August 20

One of the most notorious criminal cases of the 1990s is set to become the basis for a new Hulu limited series.

The story of Lorena Bobbitt gained worldwide attention in June 1993, when she cut off her husband John Bobbitt’s penis with a knife and then threw it into a field. Lorena claimed that her husband had subjected her to years of sexual and domestic abuse and that she acted in self-defense at the time of the attack. John denied the allegations of domestic abuse.

Now, the creators of Good American Family, including Grey’s Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo, have decided to revisit the story. The second season of the anthology series will focus on the events of June 1993 and the trials that followed.

The first season of Good American Family told the story of Natalia Grace, a Ukrainian-born girl with dwarfism who was adopted by an American family and abandoned three years later after her adoptive parents claimed she was actually an adult woman.

According to Variety, the second season will be inspired by the story of Lorena and John Bobbitt, a Virginia couple whose case became a massive media scandal. The publication notes that the story became an example of how personal trauma was transformed into entertainment for the public, generating thousands of crude jokes and fueling widespread debates about gender relations.

What Happened to Lorena Bobbitt

Lorena Bobbitt was charged with malicious wounding. However, in 1994, a jury found her not guilty by reason of insanity. She subsequently spent 45 days in a psychiatric hospital in Virginia.

John Bobbitt, meanwhile, went on trial on charges of sexually assaulting his wife. In November 1993, a jury acquitted him of marital rape.

Law enforcement officers managed to recover John’s severed penis. After a nine-hour operation, doctors successfully reattached it.

The couple finalized their divorce in 1995.

The Scandal That Became Part of Pop Culture

John Bobbitt also capitalized on his newfound notoriety, appearing in two pornographic films in 1994 and 1996. He is now 59 and lives in Florida.

Lorena, now 57, later devoted herself to combating domestic and sexual violence. In 2018, she founded the Lorena Gallo Foundation, which focuses on educating the public about preventing domestic violence and sexual crimes, as well as supporting survivors and their children.

She now lives in Washington with her partner and daughter.

Lorena previously told her side of the story in the four-part documentary series Lorena, released by Amazon Prime Video in 2019 and produced by Jordan Peele. In 2020, Lifetime also dramatized her story in the film I Was Lorena Bobbitt, starring Dani Montalvo, with Lorena serving as the narrator.

Now Hulu is revisiting the case — this time as a dramatic true-crime series that promises to explore not only the crime itself, but also how the sensational case became a global media spectacle.

The new season could significantly differ from previous adaptations if it focuses less on the sensational aspects of the case and more on how to portray allegations of abuse and the ensuing media frenzy without romanticizing or exploiting trauma.
