Roger Federer Makes an Unexpected Rolex Choice: Tennis Legend Steps Out in One of the Brand’s Most Talked-About Watches

21:19, August 27

Roger Federer knows how to make an entrance — and not just on the tennis court. At the ceremony celebrating his induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame, the tennis legend chose an unusual Rolex that immediately caught the attention of haute horlogerie enthusiasts.

Rather than opting for the understated classic one might expect from a star of his stature, Federer went for one of Rolex’s boldest and most talked-about recent releases: the Rolex Oyster Perpetual 36 with the new “Jubilee” dial.

It is one of the most daring watches Rolex has released in recent years. The vibrant, incredibly colorful dial, featuring the brand’s signature pattern, is reminiscent of the equally extravagant Celebration dial introduced several years ago. When that design first debuted, it sparked plenty of debate, but it quickly became something of a symbol of the 100th anniversary of the Oyster collection.

For Federer, the choice is somewhat unexpected. In recent years, he has increasingly gravitated toward bolder timepieces, including an exclusive Daytona featuring an abundance of sapphires. Before that, however, the tennis star almost always favored discreet, understated luxury, avoiding overly flashy accessories.

These watches, by contrast, were made to be noticed. They are highly expressive and bear little resemblance to Federer’s traditionally restrained style.

Perhaps the tennis legend has decided to embrace one of the biggest watch trends of recent years: 36mm is becoming the ideal size for a men’s watch. Lionel Messi, for example, is also a fan of the more compact case size. The stainless-steel model could also have filled a missing niche in Federer’s collection as an easy everyday watch.

Best of all, the model is relatively affordable by Rolex standards. Its official retail price is $6,750, making it a surprisingly accessible proposition for a watch from the Swiss luxury giant.

Whatever the reason behind Federer’s choice, watching him execute his signature shots down the baseline while wearing one of Rolex’s most eye-catching watches is undeniably a sight to behold.
