For decades, the conventional understanding of psychopathy was based largely on studies of prison populations. Today, however, researchers are turning their attention to high-functioning psychopaths — people with persistent predatory traits who are well adapted to society and able to build careers in corporations, politics and other fields while often escaping consequences for their behavior, according to The Guardian.

Here are the key findings from extensive research by Dr. Karen Mitchell and Professor Essi Viding, offering insight into how these individuals operate — and why we can be so vulnerable to them.

Why don’t we see them coming?

1. The perfect facade and absolute confidence. Most people experience considerable stress, discomfort or embarrassment when they are caught lying. “Dark personalities,” by contrast, can combine complete self-assurance with relentless deception. They do not blush or appear nervous when they lie, which can immediately make others feel at ease and effectively switch off our natural defenses.
2. Exploiting other people’s altruism. According to Professor Essi Viding, these individuals have a social group of one: themselves. Humans are inherently social creatures, inclined toward cooperation and trust. Predators, however, have survived for centuries by exploiting the altruism of others.
3. The “reverse attribution” effect (DARVO). In conflicts, such individuals can skillfully employ the tactic known as DARVO — deny, attack, and reverse victim and offender. Those around them may genuinely come to believe that the aggressor is actually the victim, while the real victim is completely discredited.

The profile of a “high-functioning predator”

After five years of research and interviews with experts ranging from HR professionals to FBI personnel and social workers, Dr. Karen Mitchell identified 20 key attributes, divided into four clusters, as well as 25 tactics associated with these individuals:

• Cluster 1 — Control and ego: a need for total control, an inflated sense of self-importance, a highly sensitive response to any challenge or criticism, vindictiveness and an unwillingness to compromise.
• Cluster 2 — Predatory behavior: a tendency to exploit others, sadism and cruelty, contempt for laws, rules and morality, a lack of boundaries in intimate relationships and unrealistically high expectations of others.
• Cluster 3 — Deception and disguise: deliberately constructing a facade of normality, chameleon-like behavior, dishonesty, cunning, manipulation and a categorical refusal to accept responsibility for the negative consequences of their actions.
• Cluster 4 — Emotional world: emotions are merely simulated; they are incapable of genuine attachment or experiencing joy through emotional connection. They are callous, lack empathy and remorse, are intensely self-centered and extraordinarily brazen.

Why is this so destructive?

• The scale of the damage: Unlike incarcerated offenders, high-functioning predators operate in offices, courtrooms, politics, charitable organizations and religious institutions. Their destructive influence can lead not only to ruined careers but also to severe psychological trauma, depression and even suicide, as documented in a number of corporate scandals in France.
• The “pathocracy” effect: When such traits emerge at the highest levels of power, society can experience phenomena such as “reverse blocking,” in which lies are communicated with such confidence and on such a massive scale that people lose their bearings while attempting to reconcile fiction with reality.

Conclusion: “A house cat versus a wild cat”

Summing up the findings of her years of work, Dr. Mitchell emphasizes:

“These are extremely dangerous people with virtually no internal restraints and fundamentally different brains — it is like the difference between a domestic cat and a wild cat.”

Since eliminating such genetic and behavioral traits through evolution is unlikely to be possible, the key task today is to stop ignoring the problem, learn to recognize the warning signs and teach people critical thinking and healthy vigilance.
