The wife of notorious drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán has revealed surprising details about their love story — a relationship that began on a dance floor in Mexico and ultimately ended with her sitting in a U.S. prison cell of her own.

Emma Coronel first met one of the founders of the Sinaloa Cartel in 2007, when she was just 17 years old. It happened only a few months after she had been crowned beauty queen at a pageant in Canelas, a town in the northern Mexican state of Durango.

“We were dancing — he was dancing with a girl, and I was dancing with another guy. But he thought I had smiled at him, when in reality I was just laughing with my friend,” the 37-year-old Coronel recalled during an almost six-hour livestream on Kick with bloggers Víctor Ordóñez and Guillermo Peña.

According to Coronel, despite Guzmán’s sinister reputation, he treated her with nothing but respect when they first met.

“He was very courteous. First, he asked if I wanted to dance — he actually asked for permission to invite me to dance,” she recalled. “Then he sent me flowers. With me, he was a true gentleman.”

Coronel married El Chapo, who was 50 at the time, on her 18th birthday. The wedding took place at her family’s home in the small rural town of La Angostura.

“It was a very intimate ceremony, just the people closest to us,” she said.

In 2011, Coronel gave birth to the couple’s twin daughters. She said her husband enjoyed long walks in the mountains, riding motorcycles and gambling, although she insisted he did not have a gambling addiction.

Despite their circumstances, the couple tried to maintain contact. Coronel said they never went an entire month without speaking to each other, although traveling together was virtually impossible.

“By the time I came into his life, he was already a different person. He was no longer who he used to be,” she said.

According to Coronel, Guzmán could no longer travel or move around freely.

Coronel has not seen her husband since July 17, 2019 — the day El Chapo was sentenced to life in prison in the United States. The Federal Bureau of Prisons barred Coronel and the couple’s two daughters from maintaining contact with the convicted drug lord.

Yet, she said, what she misses most is something seemingly simple — the way her husband used to talk to her.

“He talked to me as if I were a little child,” she admitted. “That’s what I miss the most, because no one else has ever spoken to me that way.”

But Coronel’s relationship with El Chapo ultimately landed her behind bars as well.

On February 22, 2021, less than two years after her husband received his life sentence, the FBI arrested Coronel at Dulles International Airport. She was charged with money laundering and involvement in drug trafficking.

Coronel pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three years in prison.

She spent her first year in solitary confinement at a detention facility in Alexandria, Virginia. She was allowed to leave her cell for just one hour a day.

“It’s the hardest thing that can happen to a person, because you realize what it does to you,” Coronel recalled. “It’s horrible to imagine what is happening outside, how everyone is living, while you have no idea what is really going on and no ability to control anything.”
