A picturesque beach in Greece has been branded “hell on Earth” after being overrun by seemingly endless crowds of tourists.

Footage filmed at Balos Beach on the northwestern tip of Crete shows the shoreline completely packed with holidaymakers, while more and more visitors continued pouring in from arriving boats and ferries. There were so many people on the beach that nobody could even move.

Balos Beach is famous for its turquoise waters and breathtaking scenery, attracting thousands of visitors every year.

According to local media reports, authorities are now working on plans to limit the number of visitors allowed on the beach at any given time in an effort to protect its unique ecosystem.

Under the proposed measures, no more than 1,200 people would be allowed on the shoreline every three hours, regardless of whether they arrive by car or by boat.

This summer, many other parts of Greece have also been struggling under the weight of mass tourism. Earlier in August, chaotic crowds of visitors descended on Santorini, forming snaking queues right through the island’s streets.

Two-hour waits turned the picturesque lanes of Oia — the famous cliffside village considered one of the island’s most “Instagrammable” locations — into a scene of chaos, all for the perfect shot against the backdrop of its iconic blue-and-white Orthodox churches.

Victims of TikTok Trends

In pursuit of the perfect selfie, hordes of like-hungry tourists begin lining up in winding streets as early as 7 a.m. Many of these locations are heavily promoted by popular TikTok creators, including creative director Louisa Parente, who has 8.4 million followers and recently shared footage of herself enduring a grueling two-hour wait for the “perfect” photo.

But social media users have been far from impressed by such videos:

• “Social media has simply destroyed tourism,” one commenter complained.
• “And what is all this for? To show people a staged photo, while knowing perfectly well that the real memory of the vacation was spending two hours standing in a morning queue.”

The sheer scale of overcrowding has already forced Greek authorities to impose restrictions on the number of cruise passengers allowed to disembark each day on the country’s volcanic islands.
