The transition to adulthood isn’t always easy — even when you’re the granddaughter of the President of the United States. Nineteen-year-old Kai Trump gave her YouTube subscribers an unfiltered look at her “difficult” adjustment to college life at the University of Miami.
The eldest daughter of Donald Trump Jr. and Vanessa Trump headed to Florida at the end of August to begin her freshman year and join the university’s women’s golf team. But her first days on campus were marred by tears, everyday struggles and even health problems.
In her latest vlog, Kai documented the emotional and difficult moments of saying goodbye to family and friends in her hometown of Jupiter, Florida. The aspiring professional golfer admitted that she had never considered herself particularly sentimental.
“I’m not a very emotional person at all, so crying is crazy for me. But realizing that I’m going to have to say goodbye to everyone tonight is just killing me,” she said tearfully as she returned from the golf course.
Saying goodbye to her mother was especially difficult as Vanessa Trump has been battling breast cancer in recent months.
Kai’s first week in her new Miami apartment was filled with stress. Between golf practices, team meetings and classes, her packed schedule left her with virtually no time to take care of everyday chores.
Things got so bad that her friend Emma, who came to visit, was shocked by the state of Kai’s refrigerator. Bringing an assortment of frozen meals, bread, fruit and prosciutto, Emma told the camera that Kai “hadn’t eaten in three days” and was surviving almost entirely on Diet Coke.
But the freshman’s troubles didn’t end there. During her very first week, Kai came down with tonsillitis. She had to abruptly put college life on hold and return home to her mother so Vanessa could “get her back on her feet.” Once she recovered, Kai returned to campus to resume her studies and golf training with the team.
Kai had previously complained in her vlogs about the harsh realities of living on her own. During a shopping trip to Target, her mother Vanessa insisted that her daughter buy dish soap and cleaning supplies, telling her that from now on, she would be responsible for cleaning her own apartment.
