Donald Trump has openly said he is pleased that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have left the United States and returned to Britain, adding that he has never been a fan of the couple.

The US president accused the Duke and Duchess of Sussex of showing “the greatest disrespect” toward the monarchy and said that, had he been a member of the royal family, he would have slammed the door shut on them.

Last week, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle returned to Britain with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. The move marked the end of their six-year life in America as they began a new chapter in their home country.

The family is reportedly planning to remain in the UK for an “extended period,” with the picturesque Cotswolds reportedly being considered as a possible permanent home.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Donald Trump gave a blunt assessment of the Sussexes’ departure from the US.

“I’m glad. I’ve never been a fan of theirs,” he said.

The president stressed that he had always enjoyed a warm relationship with the British royals.

“I had a very good relationship with the Queen. A really good one. I got to know her very well. And I have a great relationship with King Charles. I knew him when he was still the Prince, and now he’s the King. We’ve known each other for a very long time. He’s a great guy.”

Turning his attention to Harry and Meghan, Trump said their treatment of the monarchy had been unacceptable.

“I thought they treated the Royal Family with the greatest disrespect. I didn’t like it. I didn’t like the way she behaved. I thought she was terribly disrespectful to the Queen and to King Charles.”

Trump was particularly blunt when asked about the possibility of the Sussexes being welcomed back into the royal fold.

“I wouldn’t take them back. If I were a member of the Royal Family, I would never let him back in.”
