American tennis star Taylor Townsend has faced a wave of criticism over her outfit ahead of her match against world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka at the US Open on Sunday.

Throughout the tournament’s opening week, one of the biggest talking points away from the courts has been what female players are wearing before their matches. Sabalenka and Naomi Osaka have already found themselves at the center of the fashion debate — and now it is Townsend’s turn.

The 30-year-old American arrived at Arthur Ashe Stadium in a striking all-black outfit complete with feathers. She also wore a hood over her head as she made her way onto the court.

The look went viral almost instantly, leaving tennis fans stunned by the player’s bold fashion choice.

“What a disgrace. Just wear a normal tennis uniform. This is getting ridiculous. We should take a page from Wimbledon — all matches in the US should be played the same way. This is absurd,” one X user wrote.

Another, posting a photo of Townsend, fumed: “What the hell is she wearing? Taylor Townsend looks ridiculous.”

“These ‘look at me’ outfits are starting to get tiresome. If Taylor wanted to look like the Abominable Snowman, she definitely nailed it,” another commenter joked, comparing the tennis star to the legendary American folklore creature.

The controversy surrounding Townsend’s outfit is just the latest chapter in a US Open trend where players’ unconventional fashion choices are increasingly becoming the subject of heated debate among fans.

Sabalenka has been one of the biggest names at the center of the fashion conversation. The world No. 1 has already turned heads in New York with a black basketball-inspired ensemble, worn over a bright orange sports top and matching shorts during the mixed-doubles tournament.

The two-time defending US Open champion later stepped onto the court in a similar look, this time entirely in orange, and defeated Camila Osorio 6-4, 6-4 to begin her title defense in New York.

On Wednesday, Sabalenka was back in black — this time wearing a black sports top and matching shorts. The outfit seemed to bring her luck: the Belarusian player crushed Russian tennis player Polina Yatcenko 6-1, 6-1.

Naomi Osaka has also faced criticism. The Japanese star has become known in recent years for her bold fashion choices at Grand Slam tournaments.

On Thursday, Osaka appeared on court in an all-white look featuring a long shirt decorated with embroidered tennis-racket motifs. The long panels of fabric trailed behind her, and on her way to the net for the pre-match coin toss, she even stepped on her own outfit.

On Saturday, Osaka opted for a light-gray zip-up hoodie beneath a sharp gray checked blazer. She completed the look with unusually wide, flowing gray trousers.

It seems that at this year’s US Open, female players are competing for more than just victories on the court — the fashion battle for the tournament’s most unforgettable entrance is heating up too.
