“We Went Down Like the Titanic”: Newlyweds Plunge Into River During Wedding Photoshoot

23:01, September 7

Newlyweds Jamie and Michelle Wade, both 46, were posing for photographs in a canoe on the River Bure in Norfolk, England, when they lost their balance and ended up plunging straight into the water.

The incident happened on August 29 and was just one of a series of mishaps that accompanied their wedding day. But the newlyweds refused to let their unexpected dip ruin their big day.

Michelle was wearing her £1,800 wedding dress at the time.

“I just remember us starting to sink, and I thought, ‘I can’t go in — I’m wearing my wedding dress, I’ve just had my hair done!’” she recalled. “I’d only put the dress on two hours earlier.”

According to Michelle, the canoe sank so quickly that the couple literally “went down like the Titanic.”

“We love the River Bure, but I never thought I’d end up in it,” she admitted.

Instead of the elegant wedding photographs the couple had been hoping for, they ended up with images straight out of a disaster movie: the bride and groom, soaking wet from head to toe, stranded in the middle of the river.

But the couple decided to turn the awkward moment into a joke and even shared a kiss while still in the water.

“It wasn’t quite the elegant wedding photograph we had imagined, but somehow it perfectly captures our whole day — completely unexpected, a little chaotic, soaking wet, incredibly funny and yet filled with love,” Michelle said.

A Love Story That Began at 13

Their love story began back at school.

Jamie and Michelle met in 1993, when they were both just 13 years old. They dated, but after leaving school they went their separate ways and started different lives.

Years later, fate unexpectedly brought them back together.

In 2016, Jamie spotted Michelle by chance in the car park of a Tesco supermarket.

“I saw Michelle walking across the car park and I was overcome by that feeling of panic you only get when childhood dreams suddenly come back to you,” he recalled. “I thought, ‘If I don’t talk to her now, I never will.’”

The couple got back together, and five years later Jamie proposed to Michelle — once again, on board a boat.

Since then, Jamie says, they have been “inseparable” and have never spent more than a day apart.

So despite the soaked £1,800 dress and the spectacularly unexpected ending to their wedding photoshoot, the couple appear to have ended up with exactly the kind of wedding pictures that can never be forgotten.

And, judging by their story, they now have the perfect opening chapter to their marriage: they literally went down together — and climbed back out together.
