Andrew Garfield has decided to start a revolution — at least in words for now. The Hollywood actor urged billionaires to “be scared shitless” following the release of his new film about a revolt of the poor against the wealthy. But audiences were quick to ask an awkward question: doesn’t Garfield himself make millions from the very system he is so fiercely criticizing?

At a Los Angeles screening of the historical drama The Uprising, Garfield and director Paul Greengrass discussed the film, which is set during the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381 in England.

The movie takes viewers back to the aftermath of the Black Death. The country is going through desperate times, the population is impoverished, and new taxes imposed by the court of King Richard II to fund the Hundred Years’ War push ordinary people to the brink of despair.

And Garfield, it seems, saw a distinctly modern message in the story.

“If billionaires watch it, I hope they’re scared”

When an audience member asked the actor what he hoped the film’s main impact would be, Garfield initially spoke about unity and social awakening.

He said he hoped viewers would recognize their own struggles in the characters and leave the cinema feeling inspired to take action.

Then his tone suddenly changed.

“And I hope if any billionaires watch it, they are scared shitless,” the actor said.

The remark immediately went viral on social media.

But instead of frightening billionaires, Garfield was met with a wave of mockery and accusations of hypocrisy.

“So who pays you millions?”

Users on X were quick to remind the actor that his own career is hardly built on the lifestyle of a medieval peasant.

“You mean the billionaires who greenlight your movies and write you multimillion-dollar checks? Or do they not count?” former Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt sarcastically wrote.

Pratt also claimed that Garfield was paid around $5 million to play billionaire Sam Altman in the film Artificial.

The irony proved too tempting for people to ignore: an actor playing a rebel against the wealthy is himself making millions in a Hollywood industry where major projects are controlled by people with enormous fortunes.

“A millionaire pretending to be an oppressed worker”

Columnist John William Sherrod went even further, mocking Garfield for trying to portray himself as someone close to the working class.

Another critic, Noam Blum, CTO of Tablet Magazine, took aim at the entire concept of the movie.

“The number of billionaires involved in making this film will probably be greater than the number who watch it,” he quipped.

It leaves the film in a rather awkward position: The Uprising tells the story of the poor rising up against a wealthy elite, while its millionaire star finds himself at the center of a debate over whether someone earning millions is really in a position to tell billionaires to be afraid.
