Elon Musk is the subject of a new documentary whose creators describe him both as “possibly the greatest living inventor” and “a man who went mad.” Musk himself had no involvement in the making of the film.

Musk, directed by Alex Gibney, is an almost four-hour examination of the billionaire’s life, career and meteoric rise to become one of the most influential figures of the modern era.

The filmmakers are already building anticipation for the premiere with a new teaser — and judging by the trailer, they have no intention of portraying Musk as a flawless hero.

The trailer opens with a rocket blasting into space, while voices from media reports and commentators describe the 55-year-old entrepreneur.

Musk is called “possibly the greatest living inventor” and a “real-life Iron Man.” But the tone then takes a sharp turn, with commentators describing him as “chaotic,” “unpredictable,” “capricious” and “clearly cruel and selfish.”

The trailer reaches its climax with a title card describing Musk as “the most unchecked man on Earth.” At that moment, a voiceover delivers an even harsher verdict: “a man who went mad.”

The rocket seen at the beginning of the trailer explodes at the end, before the film’s title — Musk — appears on screen.

Musk calls the film ‘a hit job’

Elon Musk had no involvement in the making of the documentary. Back in 2023, he publicly criticized the project on X, calling it “a hit job.”

Director Alex Gibney responded with a brief question: “How do you know?”

The filmmakers argue that the sheer scale of Musk’s influence demands a fresh examination of his activities.

“Elon Musk has accumulated so much power that he resembles a Marvel Comics character,” the film’s description on the Toronto International Film Festival website says.

The documentary examines the entrepreneur’s major projects and achievements: Tesla turned electric cars into a mass-market phenomenon, Starlink expanded access to the internet, Twitter came under his control, and the DOGE project radically reshaped the workings of the U.S. government.

Musk has also found himself at the center of the artificial intelligence boom and, after SpaceX went public this summer, became the richest person in the world.

“His influence is likely felt by every person on the planet. Doesn’t that deserve a closer examination?” the filmmakers ask.

Gibney worked on the documentary alongside Michael J. Palmer. Among those featured in the film are journalist Kara Swisher and philosopher Sam Harris.

The documentary will also feature Justine Musk, Elon Musk’s first ex-wife.
