Princess Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer, has made sensational claims about King Charles’s private life in his new memoir, reviving long-standing rumors about the monarch’s relationship with one of his closest aides — rumors that have repeatedly been denied by the royal household.

Charles Spencer claims that Diana once told him: “My husband is in love with his valet.” According to the Earl, this happened after his sister told him she intended to divorce Charles.

The valet is not named in an excerpt from the book, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, published by the Daily Mail. However, for decades there have been rumors about a close relationship between the then-Prince Charles and his longtime aide Michael Fawcett.

The story dates back to the 1990s. In 1996, George Smith, another former valet who worked within the prince’s circle, alleged that he had been raped by a royal aide during a period of severe psychological distress. Separately, he claimed to have witnessed an incident involving a member of the royal family and a senior royal servant.

In 2003, Fawcett obtained a court injunction preventing a British newspaper from publishing a claim that he was the man allegedly caught in the incident with a member of the royal family. British media later identified Fawcett as the person behind the injunction, although the allegation itself was never officially confirmed.

Prince Charles’s private secretary, Sir Michael Peat, issued a statement at the time rejecting the allegations without detailing them. He also questioned Smith’s reliability as a source, noting that he “sadly suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and had previously suffered from alcoholism.”

Several days later, it emerged that Peat had even asked his press secretary whether he believed Charles was gay or bisexual. The spokesman replied that this was “categorically untrue.” Clarence House, Charles’s official residence and office at the time, also publicly stated that the allegations were completely baseless.

Michael Fawcett became particularly well known in Britain for the story of how he would squeeze toothpaste onto Charles’s toothbrush after the prince broke his arm playing polo. In 1998, Fawcett resigned following complaints about his behavior and allegations that he had bullied staff, but he soon returned to work and was promoted.

He later became head of the Prince’s Foundation charity, but stepped down from the role in 2021 amid a scandal. George Smith died in 2005.

Smith claimed that Diana had recorded his account of the alleged affair, but that the recording disappeared after her death.

In his memoir, Spencer recalls Diana inviting him to lunch at an expensive London restaurant and telling him that she intended to seek a divorce. Her brother tried to persuade her against it, but, according to Spencer, Diana replied: “My husband is in love with his valet.”

Spencer’s new revelations have already prompted an unusually strong response from Buckingham Palace. Earlier this week, it emerged that he claims in the book that, several days after Diana’s death, Charles told him: “Rest assured, we’ll forget her soon enough.”

Buckingham Palace responded: “His Majesty recognizes that the pain of losing a loved one can cloud the mind, affect one’s ability to make decisions and alter memories in ways that may remain imperceptible to others even many years after a tragedy.”

Later that morning, Charles called Spencer. According to the Earl, unlike the other people who called him, shocked and barely able to find words of condolence, Charles sounded “cheerful, excited, as though he had won the lottery — that is how I remember it.”

Spencer interprets the reaction as follows: in his view, the prince’s first thought was “how this event could free him to marry the woman he loved,” rather than recognizing the loss of a woman he did not love.

In his memoir, Spencer also revisits the story of Diana and Charles’s marriage. He claims that the day before their wedding, Charles told Diana that “she should know that he was very happy to marry her, but that he did not actually love her.”

According to Spencer, at one point the prince squeezed Diana’s waist and remarked: “Oh, we’re a little bit plump here, aren’t we?”

Diana’s brother also writes that she would sometimes get behind the wheel and drive to Beachy Head — England’s highest chalk sea cliff — while contemplating ending her life. According to Spencer, her love for her sons prevented her from taking the next step.
