Princess Anne appears to have developed a reputation for having tastes that are far removed from the royal idea of luxury. Rather than elaborate dishes, she reportedly prefers simple food — frozen pies, tinned vegetables and even overripe bananas.
According to RadarOnline.com, the 76-year-old Princess Anne — the only daughter of the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip — has favored practical, uncomplicated food for years rather than elaborate haute cuisine.
Despite decades of attending official engagements and state banquets, the princess’s tastes are said to be remarkably simple. Among her favorites are Fray Bentos pies, quickly defrosted foods and ordinary vegetables. What’s more, Anne reportedly often skips lunch altogether.
“Anne eats the kind of food that even the poorest families in Britain would find disgusting, and it exposes her to cruel mockery from other members of the royal family and palace staff,” a source claimed.
Anne’s love of simple food reportedly extends to entertaining guests as well. At her Gatcombe Park home in Gloucestershire, she is said to have served guests Fray Bentos pies with peas or green beans and boiled potatoes.
Her approach to dinner parties is equally unconventional. Anne has previously joked that she prefers her guests not to stay too late.
“After all, you want everyone out of the house by 9:15 p.m. At dessert, I give them a Choc Ice so they can eat it in the car,” the princess reportedly said.
But her unusual preferences are not limited to frozen and tinned foods.
Former royal chef Darren McGrady has previously revealed that Anne “almost always preferred bananas almost black — overripe — because they are easier to digest.”
The princess also frequently skips lunch. The habit has reportedly been shared by her brother, King Charles III, who has traditionally believed that stopping for a midday meal takes valuable time away from work.
The routine is entirely in keeping with Anne’s long-standing reputation as one of the hardest-working members of the royal family, with an exceptionally packed schedule of official engagements.
Chef Michael Mercer also recalled an occasion when he prepared a lavish six-course lunch for the princess, only for Anne to drink a cup of Earl Grey tea and politely leave without touching the food.
“She thanked me and left. Her security guards, however, were very happy — they thoroughly enjoyed eating it all themselves,” Mercer recalled.
Members of the royal family have long been known for their rather distinctive eating habits.
Charles is believed to favor seasonal organic produce and also frequently skips lunch, while the late Queen Elizabeth II was known for her modest portions and fondness for afternoon tea.
Official royal banquets may look truly lavish, but behind palace doors, the British royal family’s diets can be far more traditional and unpretentious.
