Former England footballer Andy Carroll has revealed that he was sexually assaulted several years ago by a “celebrity friend” who was later sentenced to three years in prison. The footballer said the ensuing court case was a “humiliating and horrific” experience for him.

The 37-year-old Carroll has spoken about the incident in detail for the first time in his new memoir, Owning It. The footballer said he had hesitated for a long time before including the story in his book and made the final decision only at the last minute, after lengthy conversations with his publisher.

“I was sexually assaulted. There, I’ve said it. It’s frightening even to think about, and until now only a handful of people knew about it.”

The attacker was found guilty of sexual offences and sentenced to three years in prison.

Carroll said the assault happened one evening after a Newcastle match. According to the footballer, the “celebrity friend” of his then-partner had invited himself to their home to watch a boxing match together.

Describing their relationship, Carroll wrote that the man would constantly invite him and his former partner to go out and even bought him clothes.

“He’s divorced, he has children, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that he liked me in more than a platonic way. Whenever I saw him at parties, he was always with young men,” Carroll wrote in his memoir.

That evening, Carroll was returning home after the match when the man messaged him and asked what he was doing. Later, he asked whether he could come over to watch the boxing with them.

Carroll’s partner advised him to stop turning his friend down and not to ignore him. According to the footballer, the guest soon took over the kitchen and began mixing drinks. Some time later, Carroll felt dizzy and suspected that something might have been added to his drink.

“Right, time for bed,” I told him. “I’ll get you a taxi.” But the man replied that he would stay in the spare room.

Carroll later said he woke up to find that his guest was sexually assaulting him.

“I sleep naked, and when I wake up, this guy is under the covers trying to perform oral sex on me,” the footballer wrote.

Carroll said he punched the attacker and ordered him to leave the house.

“I hit him as hard as I could and he collapsed onto the floor,” the sportsman recalled.

He then grabbed the man by the legs and dragged him out onto the driveway. After returning inside, Carroll locked the door and called the police and the babysitter.

“And then it suddenly hit me: what if I’ve killed him?” he wrote.

The man regained consciousness just as the police arrived and, according to Carroll, immediately told officers that the footballer had attacked him for no reason. The man was arrested, while Carroll was also taken to the police station.

The attacker was later found guilty of sexual offences and sentenced to three years in prison. He was also placed on the sex offenders’ register and banned from entering the village where Carroll lived.

The footballer described the court proceedings as “humiliating, shameful and absolutely horrific”. The defendant denied the charges.

“The case dragged on for two years. Nobody knew anything about it except my partner and her family, and they were completely unsupportive of me,” Carroll said.

He said the moment police informed him that the defendant had been found guilty was an overwhelming emotional experience.

“The police called me and told me he had been found guilty, and I just started crying uncontrollably.”

Carroll said the consequences of what happened affected virtually every part of his life.
