Ed Sheeran has lost nearly half a million Instagram followers amid the controversy surrounding his U.S. tour.

The British singer found himself at the center of a growing backlash after Macklemore was removed from the lineup for Sheeran’s Loop tour. The rapper had repeatedly made pro-Palestinian statements from the stage.

Macklemore claimed that Robert Kraft, head of the Kraft Group, which owns Gillette Stadium, personally called Sheeran and told him the rapper would not be allowed to perform at the venue. Sheeran later said he did not want to engage in a public debate over the war in Gaza and maintained that the decision to remove Macklemore was made by the tour promoter.

The situation escalated after several other artists who were scheduled to open for Sheeran also pulled out of his concerts. Pro-Palestinian protesters also gathered outside his first show without Macklemore.

On September 19, Sheeran addressed the controversy publicly for the first time during a concert in Philadelphia. He delivered a prepared statement from a teleprompter and acknowledged that he had been forced to make difficult decisions.

Sheeran then spoke about the war in the Middle East.

“What happened in Israel and at the music festival on October 7 was horrific and added to the pain that the Jewish people have experienced for centuries. What is happening in Gaza is catastrophic, unjustifiable and disproportionate. It breaks my heart to see the scale of the destruction and the loss of civilian lives and children. And the systemic injustice that we are seeing in the West Bank cannot be ignored,” he said.

The singer’s actions have drawn a mixed reaction from fans. Some attempted to return tickets for his upcoming concerts, while his social-media following began to decline sharply.

According to Social Blade figures cited by Gulf News and The Independent, Sheeran’s Instagram account lost nearly 150,000 followers on September 15, the day he first publicly addressed Macklemore’s removal from the tour. Another roughly 150,000 followers disappeared the following day, followed by about 98,000 more a day later.

The decline continued over the weekend, when Sheeran took the stage in Philadelphia for the first time since the controversy erupted and addressed the audience emotionally.

As of September 23, Sheeran had 47.2 million Instagram followers — roughly 500,000 fewer than a week earlier.
