The legendary Macallan 1926 is heading back to auction — and this time, the sale will take place at the very site where the extraordinary whisky was produced nearly 100 years ago, at the Macallan estate in Scotland’s Speyside region, according to Robb Report.

What’s more, the rare bottle could set a new world record for the highest price ever paid for a bottle of whisky.

Macallan 1926 was bottled in 1986, 60 years after it was distilled at the distillery. Just 40 bottles were produced, with all the whisky coming from a single cask, No. 263, which had previously been used to mature sherry.

After bottling, the bottles were divided into several series. Fourteen were given the signature Fine and Rare labels. Another 12 featured designs by British artist Sir Peter Blake, one of the creators of the iconic cover of The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Twelve more labels were designed by Italian artist Valerio Adami. The remaining two bottles were initially left unlabelled, although one was later hand-painted by Irish artist Michael Dillon.

The Macallan Fine and Rare 60 Years Old 1926 bottle heading to auction in October is one of the original 14 Fine and Rare editions. It was first offered for sale in 2002.

“Macallan 1926 remains one of the most iconic and coveted spirits ever produced. Its value is defined not only by its exceptional rarity but also by the extraordinary history it embodies,” said Jonny Fowle, Sotheby’s global head of whisky and spirits.

According to Fowle, marking the centenary of Macallan 1926 with the first-ever auction held directly at the Scottish distillery will be a landmark event for whisky collectors.

However, the legendary bottle will be far from the only rarity on offer at the October sale. Buyers will also have the opportunity to bid on the Macallan Romantica Collection, first unveiled in May. Its designs were created by Peter Blake, Valerio Adami and Michael Dillon. The whisky has an alcohol content of 42.6% and is intended to evoke the character of the original Macallan 1926.

The auction will also feature Macallan The Reach 81 Years Old, which was once considered the oldest whisky ever released. That record now belongs to the Balvenie 88 Year Old. The sale will also include the Macallan in Lalique Six Pillars Collection, released between 2005 and 2016.

More than 40 lots will be offered at the auction. Their combined estimated value could reach around $2.6 million.

The Macallan Fine and Rare 60 Years Old 1926 alone is expected to fetch between £1.7 million and £2.2 million. That means the bottle could break its own auction record: in 2023, a version bearing Valerio Adami’s label sold for approximately $2.3 million.
