Tom Cruise now has an entire list of box-office disappointments to revisit after his expensive black comedy Digger bombed spectacularly at the box office over the weekend, according to one of Hollywood’s leading industry insiders.
That assessment came Monday from Puck’s Matthew Belloni in an edition of his What I’m Hearing newsletter, which focused largely on Paramount and Warner. The two studios officially merged on Tuesday.
Belloni described Warner Bros.’ Digger as not only the studio’s final film as an independent company, but also Cruise’s latest failed attempt to recapture the magic that has made him one of Hollywood’s biggest stars for decades.
The journalist singled out Legendary Entertainment CEO Josh Grode, who, he said, had the foresight to walk away from financing the $160 million “disaster.”
“But the real mistake here was assuming that Cruise is enough of a star to sell Digger on his own,” Belloni continued.
According to Belloni, Cruise has not delivered a truly “big hit” outside of his franchise work since 2006, when Mission: Impossible III grossed around $400 million worldwide.
“You can argue about the ultimate profitability of some of these movies,” Belloni wrote, citing 2017’s American Made, that year’s The Mummy reboot, 2014’s Edge of Tomorrow and the Jack Reacher films released in 2012 and 2016.
He named only one clear exception: the Top Gun sequel, 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick, which raked in an impressive $1.5 billion worldwide.
The original Top Gun became Cruise’s first major sequel after his role in 1983’s Risky Business, the film widely regarded as the launching pad for his spectacular career.
What followed was a string of classics and blockbusters, including Cocktail, Rain Man, A Few Good Men, Jerry Maguire, Mission: Impossible, Collateral and War of the Worlds, among many others.
Until now, Cruise’s weakest opening during that period had been the 2007 war drama Lions for Lambs. The film earned less than $7 million in the U.S. during its opening weekend, eventually grossing $64.8 million worldwide.
Digger — a satirical story about an aging oil tycoon in the near future — opened to $8 million in North America and another $12 million internationally. For a film released on more than 3,300 North American screens, that was an extremely weak showing.
Meanwhile, Amazon MGM’s erotic thriller Verity, which opened Friday, quietly outperformed Cruise’s film, taking in $32.6 million.
Despite being directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu, Digger was almost universally panned by critics.
Iñárritu rose to prominence with back-to-back Oscar nominations for Best Picture — Birdman in 2014 and The Revenant in 2015. Birdman ultimately won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
However, Belloni described Iñárritu’s directorial vision as “inaccessible” to a mainstream audience and specifically pointed to his lack of a “mass audience.”
In Belloni’s view, Cruise’s star power, rather than serving as a safety net for the film, only made its failure more apparent.
