Kim Kardashian is betting on more than just maintaining a perfect figure — she is now focusing on longevity as well. One of the star’s latest obsessions is hyperbaric oxygen therapy, a treatment popular among celebrities and professional athletes. Doctors, however, warn that its ability to extend the lifespan of healthy people has yet to be proven, and that some devices can be dangerous, according to the New York Post.
“I’ve changed my mindset, and now I’m focused on longevity and cellular health,” the founder of Skims said in an interview with The Sunday Times.
Kardashian admitted that she is “obsessed with hyperbaric chambers.” Inside a specialized chamber, a person breathes a high concentration of oxygen under increased atmospheric pressure. Biohacking enthusiasts attribute a wide range of potential benefits to the treatment — from slowing the aging process and improving brain function to speeding up recovery and extending lifespan.
Kim is far from the only celebrity fascinated by the technology. Hyperbaric therapy is also used by LeAnn Rimes, Mayim Bialik, LeBron James and Michael Phelps. Biohackers Gary Brecka and Bryan Johnson have even spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on their own systems.
Dr. Owen J. O’Neill, medical director of the Division of Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine at Phelps Hospital, stresses that the scientific evidence has yet to catch up with the treatment’s popularity.
“Hyperbaric oxygen therapy does have biological effects that have generated interest among researchers studying aging,” the doctor explained. High concentrations of oxygen delivered under pressure can affect cellular function, stimulate the growth of new blood vessels, influence inflammatory processes and promote tissue repair.
That does not mean, however, that the treatment can reverse aging or extend a person’s lifespan. “For that reason, I would not recommend that a healthy person undergo HBO₂ therapy solely for ‘rejuvenation’ or longevity,” O’Neill said, adding that larger studies are needed.
The specialist is particularly wary of the use of home hyperbaric chambers. Unlike medical-grade systems, many portable models operate at lower pressures and may use compressed air instead of medical-grade oxygen. Some of these devices also do not meet the safety standards required for medical equipment.
The dangers of such systems have already been underscored by tragic incidents. In 2025, five-year-old Thomas Cooper died while undergoing treatment in a hyperbaric chamber at the Oxford Center medical facility in Detroit. According to investigators, a spark caused a fire inside the chamber. Three employees were charged in connection with the incident, including charges of second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter.
Hyperbaric therapy itself does have established medical benefits for certain conditions. The FDA has authorized its use for 14 diseases and medical conditions, including decompression sickness, carbon monoxide poisoning, certain radiation injuries, severe anemia and non-healing wounds.
But specialists do not recommend using it solely as a way to combat aging.
“Oxygen under pressure is considered a drug. Like any drug, it has a proper dose, specific indications, situations in which it should not be used, and potentially serious side effects,” O’Neill stressed.
Potential risks include damage to the ears and sinuses, seizures, low blood sugar in people with diabetes, changes in blood pressure, anxiety or claustrophobia, as well as temporary changes in vision.
So while the trendy treatment embraced by Kim Kardashian does have legitimate medical applications, it is still too early to call it a “longevity capsule.”
