Michael Douglas decided not to leave some of the wildest episodes of his life behind and has recalled a post-Golden Globes party in his new memoirs, where Bob Dylan, Beatles legend George Harrison and a huge dog with an appetite for expensive caviar all ended up in the same room, according to Page Six.
In his memoir One Helluva Ride, released on October 6, Douglas recalls how, after his first Golden Globe win in 1988, he unexpectedly found himself in the company of several legendary musicians — and one four-legged gourmet.
That evening, the actor spotted George Harrison in the lobby of the Bel-Air Hotel. Douglas greeted the musician with a nod and a wave before heading off to the awards ceremony.
Douglas won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama for his portrayal of ruthless corporate financier Gordon Gekko in Wall Street. The role later earned him an Academy Award as well.
But after the ceremony, interviews and all the other obligatory Hollywood hustle, Douglas realized that everyone else had already gone their separate ways, leaving him with no one to celebrate his victory with.
“I said, screw it,” the actor writes, and went to Trader Vic’s for a drink before returning to the hotel — “feeling somewhat elated, but a little sorry for myself.”
Shortly after midnight, however, the phone in his room rang. It was Harrison.
“Hi, Michael. I just got back to the hotel, and my friend and I thought we’d come over and say hello,” the musician said.
Douglas, of course, agreed.
“A few minutes later there was a knock at the door, and in he came. With him was the biggest dog I had ever seen, and then his ‘friend’ appeared — Bob Dylan,” the actor recalls.
Douglas calls that night “one of the most amazing nights of my life.” But even Dylan and Harrison apparently couldn’t steal the spotlight from the evening’s true star — the enormous dog.
“We sat around talking and shooting the breeze, but what I remember most was the dog. There was caviar on the table, and this giant started licking it up. And nobody stopped him,” Douglas writes.
Then Dylan delivered the line that made the scene unforgettable:
“Wow, the dog likes caviar!”
Douglas, meanwhile, was thinking about something entirely different.
“All I could think was, ‘That must be a hundred dollars a lick!’”
The story has become one of Douglas’s most vivid memories of late-1980s Hollywood — a night that began with him feeling lonely after the Golden Globes and ended with an impromptu encounter with two music legends and a dog that apparently had a taste for caviar.
