U.S. President Donald Trump has unexpectedly revealed the brand of one of his suits — a choice that stands in stark contrast to the luxury Brioni attire he is traditionally associated with.
At a rally in Grand Island, Nebraska, Trump pulled back the front of his dark navy jacket, revealing a Jos. A. Bank label sewn into the lining. The American brand markets its suits as offering “everyday low prices.”
The choice surprised social media users, as Trump has long been closely associated with the Italian fashion house Brioni. He wore the brand’s suits during his years on The Apprentice. In his 2004 book Think Like a Billionaire, Trump wrote that he bought Brioni suits off the rack.
The price difference between the two brands is substantial. Jos. A. Bank suits typically cost between $250 and $580, while Brioni models can range from $5,500 to $16,200.
Trump, however, has not always worn Brioni exclusively. His former press secretary Hope Hicks said that ahead of the 2016 presidential election, he also favored other brands, including New York-based Martin Greenfield Clothiers.
The latest choice raised questions for another reason. Social media users pointed out that Jos. A. Bank manufactures much of its clothing outside the United States, particularly in China and Bangladesh. That drew attention because Trump has spent years championing American manufacturing and imposing steep tariffs on imports.
“Interesting. Jos. A. Bank suits are made overseas, typically in countries like China and Bangladesh,” journalist Derek Guy wrote. He also noted that the company owns the Joseph Abboud brand, whose products are made in the United States, and questioned why Trump opted for the cheaper imported option.
The irony is particularly striking given the president’s trade policy. Early in his second term, Trump announced sweeping tariffs on U.S. trading partners, arguing that their policies were harming Americans. In February, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down most of those tariffs, ruling that they were unlawful.
