Steven Spielberg is developing a film about Salvatore “Sammy the Bull” Gravano, one of New York’s most notorious mobsters, who betrayed his boss, John Gotti, and helped the FBI bring down the Gambino crime family’s empire. Page Six reports the news.
Gravano’s story is considered one of the most dramatic chapters in the modern history of the American Mafia. In 1992, Gravano, who served as underboss of the Gambino crime family, agreed to cooperate with authorities and testify against Gotti. Yet Hollywood has never dedicated a major feature film to his story.
Now, Steven Spielberg could change that. His renowned production company, Amblin Entertainment, has confirmed that the project is in development. Work on the film has reportedly been underway for some time, although production has yet to begin.
According to the publication, the screenplay was written by Nicholas Pileggi, the acclaimed screenwriter behind iconic crime dramas Goodfellas, Casino, and The Irishman.
If the film moves forward, it will mark a rare foray into gangster cinema for Spielberg. The three-time Oscar winner has primarily made his name with science fiction films and war dramas.
How Sammy the Bull’s Loyalty to His Boss Led to His Downfall
Gravano agreed to cooperate with federal authorities after investigators presented him with recordings of secret wiretaps in which Gotti allegedly attempted to blame his underboss for several murders.
Gravano’s testimony played a crucial role in Gotti’s downfall. Nicknamed the “Teflon Don” for his ability to evade convictions for years, Gotti was found guilty of murder and racketeering in April 1992 and sentenced to life in prison that June. He died behind bars in 2002.
However, cooperating with law enforcement did not allow Gravano to escape punishment altogether. In 1994, he admitted his involvement in 19 Mafia-related murders and received a five-year prison sentence. His cooperation with prosecutors significantly reduced the time he might otherwise have faced.
After relocating to Arizona under the witness protection program, Gravano found himself embroiled in another criminal scandal. He was arrested in 2000 for his involvement in an ecstasy distribution network. In 2002, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison, serving 17 and a half years. He was released early, in part because of his good behavior behind bars.
