Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ Jacket Could Fetch $10 Million at Auction

15:37, October 9

Michael Jackson’s iconic black-and-red jacket, worn by the King of Pop while dancing with zombies in his legendary 1983 music video Thriller, is heading to auction. The iconic piece of clothing is expected to fetch more than $10 million, potentially setting a new record for music memorabilia, the Daily Mail reports.

The auction will be organized by Julien’s Auctions in Los Angeles in December. According to a source familiar with the matter, the jacket could sell for more than $10 million. If that estimate proves accurate, it would approach the all-time record set earlier this year when David Gilmour’s Black Strat guitar, made famous by Pink Floyd, sold for $14.55 million.

Made from calfskin, the jacket features a striking red finish, silver buckles on the cuffs, a silk lining, a stitched collar and distinctive exaggerated shoulders that create its recognizable V-shaped silhouette. The Marc Laurent Paris label remains intact inside.

Two jackets were made for the filming of Thriller. The second was deliberately distressed and torn for the scenes in which Jackson transforms into a zombie. It remained in the singer’s estate collection and was displayed at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The jacket going under the hammer is the only one Jackson wore in scenes in which he appeared without zombie makeup.

The iconic silhouette was designed by costume designer Deborah Nadoolman Landis. With its exaggeratedly broad shoulders, the outfit accentuated Jackson’s figure and became one of the most recognizable looks in pop music history.

The Glove That Helped Make Moonwalking History

Other items associated with pivotal moments in Jackson’s career will also be offered alongside the jacket. Among them are the black leather Florsheim loafers the singer wore while filming Thriller and rehearsing. They are estimated to sell for $30,000 to $50,000.

Another highlight is the famous rhinestone-studded glove Jackson wore during his historic performance of Billie Jean on the Motown 25 television special. It was during that performance that viewers witnessed his legendary moonwalk.

The glove is being auctioned for the first time since November 2009, just months after the singer’s death. It was purchased at the time by Hong Kong businessman Hoffman Ma for $430,000, setting a record for an item of this kind.

Auction organizers have described the glove as the “Holy Grail” of Michael Jackson memorabilia collecting.

The sale will form part of a series of exhibitions and auctions taking place in Abu Dhabi. Before the December auction, selected items will go on an international tour.
