Why Do Billionaires Have So Many Children If They Aren’t Prepared to Raise Them Themselves?

23:01, October 9

Kim Kardashian’s admission that five nannies help care for her four children has sparked an uproar. But among the ultrawealthy, there are far more extreme approaches to parenthood, The Guardian reports.

In 2022, Kim Kardashian offered career-minded women some advice: “Get your fucking ass up and work. It seems like nobody wants to work these days.”

The billionaire faced considerable backlash for the remark, although it is difficult to accuse her of hypocrisy: turning a controversial sex tape into years of fame and a business empire undoubtedly takes considerable effort. Yet, like many successful people who preach hard work, the Skims co-founder prefers to delegate the less glamorous aspects of everyday life — household chores included.

Following her divorce from Kanye West, Kardashian was awarded primary custody of their four children. In an interview with The Sunday Times, she revealed that she had hired five nannies to help look after them. “One nanny on shift, four on rotation,” she explained. Even with such an impressive team of helpers, Kim says she still drives her children to school herself.

The revelation about the five nannies caused quite a stir. Much of the reaction reflects society’s tendency to scrutinize how women raise their children while asking fathers far fewer questions about their own parenting. I admit that my initial reaction to Kardashian’s confession was also critical. But, honestly, if I had the opportunity to hand over all the tedious routines of parenthood to someone else, I would probably take it, too. Exhausting yourself by trying to do absolutely everything alone does not make you a better mother.

Still, one question remains: why have four children if you do not have time to raise them? Especially when Kim’s family did not grow by accident: her third and fourth children were born via surrogate after complications during her previous pregnancies.

Four children, however, are only a modest beginning compared with some billionaires who seem obsessed with perpetuating their bloodlines, if not necessarily with the actual business of parenting.

Pavel Durov, the Russian-born founder of Telegram, has reportedly fathered more than 100 children in 12 countries through sperm donation. Chinese billionaire Xu Bo has also reportedly fathered more than 100 children born to surrogate mothers. And Elon Musk has 14 children, according to publicly available information.

While some of the ultrawealthy are building enormous families, having even one child is becoming increasingly unaffordable for many others. According to a 2024 Pew Research Center study, among Americans under 50 who said they were unlikely to have children, 36% cited financial costs as one of the main reasons.

In the past, large families were more commonly associated with less affluent households. That trend is gradually changing, however, with research suggesting that larger families are becoming increasingly common among wealthy people.

For billionaires, having numerous children alongside an army of nannies has become a kind of status symbol. There is just one catch to this particular luxury: children grow up, and one day they may ask their parents not for another expensive gift, but for a serious conversation with a therapist.
