Donald Trump’s niece, Mary Trump, has offered her take on why the US president appears so attached to his personal aide, Natalie Harp, who is 45 years his junior. According to Mary, the 35-year-old White House aide is constantly by the president’s side and displays extraordinary devotion to him, while Trump himself seems to have no objection to the attention.
Speaking on The Daily Beast Podcast, Mary Trump said Harp exhibits “stalker-like behavior” and suggested that her uncle enjoys this kind of obsessive attention.
“All of Donald’s relationships are transactional,” Mary said. “Clearly, his children don’t care about him any more than he cares about them. These relationships are determined entirely by what one person can get from another.”
According to Mary, cracks are already beginning to show within the president’s inner circle. As an example, she pointed to former White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, who eventually left the administration despite her conspicuous loyalty to Trump.
Mary described Leavitt as “one of the most devoted, obsequious and disgraceful propagandists in the administration.” In her view, Leavitt was willing to lie for the president and shared his rude and disrespectful attitude toward others.
“But even she had her limits, because he was willing to put her life in danger aboard Air Force One,” Mary said, referring to an incident involving the presidential aircraft. According to her, Leavitt was not invited to accompany Trump aboard the plane when a dangerous situation arose.
“We’re seeing the same thing with other people, too,” she added.
Mary stressed that even the president’s most loyal supporters may eventually refuse to tolerate humiliation or put their lives at risk. “Even those who support him unconditionally and indulge him have their limits when it comes to how much humiliation they’re willing to endure and how much they’re willing to risk their own lives,” she said.
Natalie Harp, however, appears to be different from Trump’s other staff members, in Mary’s view.
“There’s clearly something seriously wrong with her. I think she has psychological problems. She needs help. She exhibits stalker-like behavior,” the president’s niece said.
In 2023, while working for Trump, Harp wrote him personal letters filled with admiration and emphatic declarations of loyalty. The Daily Beast previously published the full text of the letters. In them, the aide described the president as her “protector and guardian” and assured him that she never wanted to let him down.
In one letter, Harp reportedly wrote that she wanted to make Trump proud of her while simultaneously emphasizing that she was unworthy of his trust.
“This is the only time in my life I’ve seen a stalking victim who is happy to be stalked,” Mary said, commenting on her uncle’s relationship with his aide.
In her view, Trump gets from Harp the attention he struggles to receive from other people.
“Donald doesn’t get the attention he needs because nobody cares about him. And that’s hardly surprising, because he doesn’t care about anybody else,” Mary said. According to her, Harp is willing to make up for that lack of attention.
In recent months, Natalie Harp has accompanied the president on trips almost constantly. In July, she was among three aides entrusted to accompany Trump aboard a classified military aircraft after the Secret Service deemed threats against the presidential Air Force One credible.
Harp’s constant presence alongside the president has also raised questions among some members of the American public. According to a poll conducted in September, more than 40% of respondents said they wanted clarification about her role in the administration.
Mary Trump is puzzled by why the story has not attracted even more attention.
“Nobody seems to see a problem with this,” she said of the president’s relationship with his aide. “If an 81-year-old Democratic president spent so much time with a 35-year-old woman, giving her more attention than anyone in his own family, I’m sure it would raise questions. But we live in a different world now.”
