U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has become the target of ridicule after a video showed him struggling to keep up during a military workout. The clip sparked a wave of criticism on social media, and the hosts of the popular American talk show The View seized the opportunity to question the Pentagon chief’s physical fitness.

In the footage, Hegseth appears to struggle to keep pace with service members taking part in the training session. The video quickly went viral, drawing mockery amid the secretary’s recent hard-line statements about the standards expected of American troops.
“What is he trying to compensate for with this behavior?” co-host Whoopi Goldberg asked.
“He wouldn’t even be able to handle my Pilates class,” quipped Alyssa Farah Griffin.
Sara Haines, meanwhile, pointed to Hegseth’s recent speech in which he took a tough stance on military fitness standards and the appearance of service members.
“You can’t go around making statements like ‘no fat people, no beards, no weirdos, no slow people’ and then turn out to be the slow person yourself. That’s not going to work,” Haines said.
She was referring to Hegseth’s speech at a military base in Virginia in September. At the time, the defense secretary declared that the U.S. armed forces would no longer be a “department of wimps” and insisted that the military should consist exclusively of warriors.
“No more fat troops. No more transgenders. No more beards. No more weirdos. No more wimps. No more radicals. The era of the warrior is here,” he proclaimed, using derogatory language to refer to certain groups of people.
His remarks drew sharp criticism. For some of The View hosts, the speech sounded so absurd that they initially mistook it for a sketch from the comedy show Saturday Night Live.
“I literally thought that last quote was a parody. I saw it on social media and thought, ‘That can’t be real,’” Griffin admitted.
Griffin acknowledged that Hegseth had served his country, but questioned whether he was in a position to lecture seasoned military leaders.
“He’s criticizing four-star generals and admirals who have decades of experience, both in combat and in leadership. He’s belittling their service to the country, yet he talks about a military I don’t recognize. It’s not the military I saw when I worked in the White House,” said Griffin, a former member of the Trump administration.
