A group of British schoolgirls has spoken out against the sexualization of school uniforms in the adult entertainment industry, launching a petition calling for their use in pornographic videos to be banned. The initiative has already attracted more than 28,000 signatures, and the teenagers have also received support from members of the British Parliament.
Students at The Cooper School in Bicester believe traditional school attire — including tartan skirts resembling kilts and fitted blazers — has acquired sexual connotations that have little to do with the real lives of teenagers.
They told the BBC that school uniforms had been “distorted by sexualization.”
In April, the British government approved legislation banning adult performers from portraying minors in pornographic films. However, according to the New York Post, the law had not yet come into force at the time of publication.
According to the campaigners, the problem extends beyond pornographic websites. The girls say they face unwanted attention even in their home county of Oxfordshire, where strangers stare at them, shout obscene remarks and sometimes follow them.
One 15-year-old campaigner admitted that even the thought of wearing a pleated miniskirt outside school makes her feel frightened.
“Girls and young women should not have to grow up watching their school uniforms being sexualized,” said Alex Davies-Jones, a British MP who advocates for victims of exploitation. She also expressed support for the schoolgirls who had spoken publicly about the issue.
The teenagers have highlighted how widespread the “sexy schoolgirl” image has become in adult entertainment. According to the New York Post, pornographic platforms, including Pornhub and OnlyFans, feature tens of thousands of videos built around this theme.
Revealing schoolgirl costumes are also sold outside the adult entertainment industry. Amazon offers hundreds of outfits marketed as “sexy schoolgirl” costumes. Similar designs are available from fashion retailers, including Dolls Kill, as well as from Michael’s, an American arts and crafts chain.
Sexualized schoolgirl imagery also appears in adult comics, manga and cosplay. The campaigners argue that this aesthetic helps normalize the idea of a school uniform as a sexualized accessory.
However, securing a complete ban on the imagery could prove difficult, as it appears in a wide range of formats — from pornographic videos to fictional characters and fancy-dress costumes.
