Hollywood actor Joe Manganiello has revealed a shocking episode from his life, when he turned to a shaman in search of answers about a mysterious illness. According to the actor, the shaman claimed that his severe condition could have been caused by a voodoo curse allegedly placed on him by one of his wife Sofia Vergara’s former fiancés.

The 49-year-old actor shared the story in his new memoir, Bloodlines. Manganiello revealed that he had suffered from a serious illness for several years, enduring excruciating abdominal pain and severe intestinal problems. Despite undergoing numerous medical examinations and treatments, he struggled for a long time to find answers about his condition.

At one point, he decided to explore alternative forms of treatment. During one such search, he contacted a Cuban shaman who, Manganiello recalled, unexpectedly began talking about his health problems over the phone.

“You’re sick. Something is wrong with your intestines,” the shaman reportedly told him.

Manganiello was stunned. Very few people, including some of his own relatives, knew the details of his condition.

“There were people in my own family who didn’t know about this — let alone some stranger on the other end of a phone line,” the actor wrote.

The shaman then offered his own explanation. According to him, one of Vergara’s former lovers was still in love with her and had allegedly placed a curse on Manganiello.

“Someone from your past still loves you. He put a voodoo curse on your husband. It happened in New Orleans,” the shaman reportedly told the couple.

He also insisted that the actor needed to undergo a special cleansing and protection ritual and suggested meeting in Ecuador, explaining that he was unable to travel to the United States.

“I looked at Sofia, trying to figure out how this man could possibly know all of this,” Manganiello recalled.

The actor said he began thinking back over his wife’s former relationships and initially suspected her former fiancé, Nick Loeb. Vergara and Loeb split in 2014, shortly before the actress began dating Manganiello. The former couple later became embroiled in a high-profile legal battle over their frozen embryos.

The illness described in Manganiello’s memoir had a profound impact on both his career and personal life. He and Vergara married in November 2015 and announced their separation in July 2023, after seven years of marriage. Their divorce was finalized in 2024.

In his memoir, the actor recounts in detail just how difficult that period was, admitting that his search for healing led him to explore some unexpected explanations for what he was experiencing.

Today, Manganiello, who got engaged to actress Caitlin O’Connor in 2025, says he has put those difficult experiences behind him.
