A member of Abu Dhabi’s royal family was found unconscious on a London street after using cocaine, while she was supposed to be looking after a young child.
Mahra Al Nahyan, 32, who is connected by marriage to Abu Dhabi’s ruling family, was found barefoot and slumped against a metal railing on a street in west London in June, The Times reported.
Footage recorded by a passerby showed the woman lying unconscious beside a man who was also unresponsive.
Nearby, a barefoot child, believed to be around three years old, was playing close to a busy road. Passersby stayed with the woman and the child until police arrived. It has not been disclosed how the toddler was related to Al Nahyan.
During a court hearing on Tuesday, the woman admitted to using cocaine in the days leading up to the incident. Prosecutor Rio Pahlavanpour told the court that when police arrived, she was so disoriented that she was unable to answer their questions for around half an hour.
Pahlavanpour said a passerby had noticed the child left unattended. The boy was not wearing shoes, and a scooter was nearby. He was dangerously close to moving traffic, prompting witnesses to intervene out of concern for his safety.
A search of Al Nahyan uncovered drug paraphernalia, although no illegal substances were found on her.
Abu Dhabi’s ruling family is estimated to have a fortune of around $300 billion, making it one of the wealthiest dynasties in the world.
Mahra Al Nahyan pleaded guilty to one count of child neglect. Her lawyer, Stephen Vullo, said she began treatment for drug addiction at a rehabilitation clinic immediately after the incident.
According to her defense lawyer, she intends to complete a three-month treatment program scheduled to end in late October. Afterward, she plans to rent a house near the clinic, continue treatment on an outpatient basis and attend Narcotics Anonymous meetings.
“She made a serious mistake that day, and she fully understands that,” her lawyer said.
Judge Johnson sentenced Al Nahyan to two years of community supervision, including a mandatory rehabilitation program. She was also ordered to pay fines totaling just under $8,000.
The court was told that the royal family member receives a monthly allowance of slightly more than $10,500.
