Cher has shared an extraordinary story about the creation of one of the most famous outfits of her career: the sheer dress she wore to the 1974 Met Gala. As it turns out, the material used for the iconic look was banned in the United States, and legendary actress Marlene Dietrich secretly helped smuggle it into the country.
In an interview with Vogue, the 80-year-old singer reflected on her relationship with designer Bob Mackie, who created her stage and red-carpet looks for decades. Following his death in September 2026 at the age of 87, Cher lost not only a longtime creative partner but also a close friend.

“I remember every moment,” the singer said of working with the designer. She noted that Mackie’s creations were distinguished by impeccable craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail.
“His clothes could be worn inside out because they were so beautifully made. Other people could copy his dresses, but they couldn’t make them the way he did,” Cher said.
One of Mackie’s most famous creations was the sheer dress Cher wore to the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala in 1974. Known as The Dress, it was made from completely transparent mesh covered in embroidery. Feathers adorned the hem and sleeves, fluttering as she moved.

According to Cher, the dress was originally created for a photo shoot celebrating fashion from the 1920s through the 1970s. When it was time to attend the Met Gala, the singer had no idea what to wear, so she and Mackie decided to choose one of the looks from the shoot.
“The secret about this dress that people don’t know is that it was made from a material called soufflé, which was banned in America,” Cher revealed.
It turned out that Marlene Dietrich had secretly brought the fabric into the United States specifically for Mackie. Cher recalled arriving for a fitting one day and noticing a woman taking something out of a refrigerator and throwing it into a wastebasket.

“I didn’t understand what she was doing, so I asked Bob, ‘Who is that?’ And he said, ‘That’s Marlene Dietrich!’ She had brought the material we used to make the dress,” Cher recalled.
The singer believes Mackie played a crucial role in shaping her signature style and establishing her as a fashion icon.
“Without Bob, I definitely wouldn’t have become a fashion icon. He played a huge part in helping me develop my own look. I came up with some ideas myself, but Bob was the one who pushed me toward those truly glamorous transformations,” Cher said.
