Obama, Mamdani and Senators on Vogue Cover: AI-Generated Fake Fooled Thousands Around the World

10:30, November 5

A fake Vogue cover featuring former U.S. President Barack Obama, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Georgia Senator Jon Ossoff and Michigan senator-elect Abdul El-Sayed has caused a stir on social media. Thousands of users around the world mistook the image for a genuine fashion magazine photoshoot. It later emerged, however, that the picture had been generated using artificial intelligence.

The fake cover was posted on Instagram by Brian Marquis, who describes himself as a comedian. The post went viral almost immediately.

In the image, Mamdani poses in jeans, a black V-neck sweater and a long brown coat. Obama stands beside him in a navy suit, smiling at the camera. Senator Jon Ossoff leans against a wall wearing a velvet blazer, tailored trousers and glasses. The fourth member of the imagined photoshoot, Abdul El-Sayed, is seated on a stool in a long-sleeved green shirt and black trousers.

The cover features the headline: “The Most Stylish Men. Obama and the Next Generation. World Leaders, Style Icons: A Vogue Conversation.” Another phrase, printed in large white letters, reads: “Men Who Love Women.”

The post has already received more than 363,000 likes and thousands of comments. While many users immediately recognized it as a fake, plenty admitted they had initially believed the image was real.

“Please God, tell me this isn't AI,” one user wrote.

“I fall for these AI fakes every single time,” another admitted.

“Is this real? Because if it is, it's absolutely fabulous!” a third commenter asked.

Some fans even urged Vogue to make the photoshoot a reality. “I wanted this to be real so badly,” one user wrote.

Others seized the opportunity to joke about Donald Trump, suggesting that the U.S. president might mistake the cover for a genuine Vogue shoot and complain about being left out.

“Wonder if Trump will take to social media to ask why he wasn't chosen for this cover,” one commenter quipped.
