In an interview with The Guardian, Elton John spoke about his childhood trauma.
According to the renowned singer, pianist and composer, he and his husband raise their sons, Zachary, 10 and Elijah, 8, without violence.
“We never hit them or lose our temper with them,” said the 74-year-old musician. “When they’re bad, they lose their pocket money, or their electronic stuff for a week—but they don’t get punished physically or mentally.
“I was always afraid of my parents,” John added stating that this affected his personality and caused problems about 30 years ago when he was battling alcohol and drug addiction.
“The self-loathing, not having any self-esteem, that all comes from when I was a kid,” he said.
“I came to defrost, as it were, and discovered I did have feelings, and they went back a long time. And I think it stays with you for the whole of your life … I just have terrible feelings about myself; I feel bad about myself sometimes,” Elton John admitted.
