At the end of August the fact of two unsuccessful performances of the opera singer Placido Domingo at the Arena di Verona festival was widely discussed all over the world. The conductor Placido Domingo apologized to the Mayor of Verona Damiano Tommasi and the organizers of the festival. His letter about the strain he experienced is quoted by OperaWire.
In August, his conducting of the opera Turandot so displeased the orchestra musicians that they refused to stand next to Domingo during the ovation. “There are no excuses. I recognize that during those performances I overexerted myself. To be on stage and especially on the podium, concentration is fundamental. I trusted until the end that the positive energy of the full Arena and of all the workers would give me the strength to move ahead with those performances in which I tried to give my best for the audience even though I had traveled from afar. The gala was especially created for me and for that reason I apologize to all the workers of the Arena," he explained the reasons for the incident.
Domingo said that the decision of the musicians to boycott him had hurt him, but as a professional he understood them. For their part, the artists of the Arena have already signed a letter, which called Domingo's performance humiliating and asked to ban him from coming to the theater festival in 2023.
