Francis Ford Coppola releases first teaser trailer for Megalopolis epic project

20:22, May 14

Francis Ford Coppola has released the first teaser trailer for his self-financed epic Megalopolis.

The scale and ambition of this project is evident in the trailers, with a star-studded cast and dynamic shots of a utopian society and protests.

According to early descriptions, this movie, which will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on Friday, is a Roman epic set in an imaginary modern America.

Starring Adam Driver, the film's cast also includes Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, Jason Schwartzman, Laurence Fishburne, Kathryn Hunter, Grace VanderWaal, Chloe Fineman, James Remar, D.B. Sweeney, and Dustin Hoffman.

Coppola first began writing Megalopolis in 1983, and the movie reportedly cost $120 million to make, which was partially funded by the sale of a large portion of the filmmaker's wine empire. At the end of March, he held a screening of this project for potential buyers, which was attended by Universal's Donna Langley, Netflix's Ted Sarandos, and Sony's Tom Rothman.

More than a month later, however, the movie is still seeking distribution, with some screening attendees telling The Hollywood Reporter that Megalopolis faces an uphill battle. One distributor said, "This film just can't be marketed," while another noted that while "everyone is rooting" for the director, "there's a business side to it."
