Latvian Raimonds Tomsons has become the best sommelier in the world in 2023. The winner was announced the day before in Paris at the meeting of 4000 professionals and wine lovers at Paris La Défense Arena.
Nina Jensen of Denmark came in second place and Reeze Choi of Hong Kong third, becoming the first Chinese candidate to reach the final, Vino Joy reports.
The competition attracted widespread attention in the wine and hospitality industry. The final was broadcast live on Sunday and watched by more than 33,000 people on the official ASI YouTube channel.
The three finalists, selected from 17 semifinalists, distinguished themselves after various tasks designed to test sommelier knowledge, tasting skills, service savvy and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
This year 68 participants from 65 countries competed for the title of World's Best Sommelier. To be considered for the ASI World's Best Sommelier, a contestant must be nominated by an ASI member association. Contestants will be quizzed and tested in a multi-day event. Participants also have an additional competition in one of the official ASI languages: English, French or Spanish. In addition, the language they choose to compete in must not be their native language.
