Til Schweiger on his visit to Armenia, collaboration with Arman Nshanian

By Syune Arakelyan

Renowned German actor Til Schweiger has recently been in Armenia. Knockin' on Heaven's Door and Inglourious Basterds star was invited here by producer and actor Arman Nshanian for a new collaboration. The actors had met at the shooting of the upcoming movie Hollywood Heist, also featuring Alec Baldwin, Nick Cannon, Mickey Rourke, Paul Sloan, and Tara Reid. The movie was directed by Mike Hatton, and co-written with Paul Sloan and produced by Asko Akopyan.

According to Nshanian and Schweiger, they found mutual interest right after being introduced at the shootings, which led to a new corporation with People of AR production by Arman Nshanian.

In their exclusive interview with NEWS.am STYLE, the actors spoke about their new projects, which will probably be shot in Armenia.

"I met Arman just two months ago; he was one of the actors in Hollywood Heist, and we became friends right away. He is a great guy. We talked about upcoming projects, so I told him about my project, which I was thinking of shooting in Bulgaria, and he said, 'Why won’t you shoot it in my country?' I sent him the script within two days. He had to translate it into Armenian. We started to consider it, and we said, 'Let’s check it out,'" recalls the actor, who was mostly impressed by Arman's personal story of leaving the US and settling back in Armenia.

"I told Til that although the US is a big country, I feel better and more free in Armenia. That's why I decided to move to Armenia along with my whole family. When he got here, he understood what I meant. Now he even thinks about buying a house in Dilijan [city of Armenia]," says Arman.

The new project by Til, which will be produced by People of AR production, is called Underdog.

"The film that we’re planning to shoot is a true story about a young Russian woman who looses everything. She is trained by her grandfather to be a fighter, and she fights those illegal years he fought. But she only fights men, and she wins all these fights. It’s an amazing story," adds Schweiger.

The actor spent his time in Armenia looking for locations for the project.

"I have had a great time with a bunch of wonderful Armenian people that are working in a movie industry. Had some really nice experiences with amazing food, amazing new people, and new friends. We saw a lot of locations. We went to Lake Sevan, Dilijan, walked around Yerevan, and we were impressed by the versatility of the city; some roads looked like in New York. Take the right, and it's like London, then you look left and it’s like Barcelona. It’s amazing!"

The actor says, although initially they were looking for a location for just one specific movie, now he thinks about shooting his other project in Armenia as well.

"There are so many opportunities and so many unbelievable locations here that we were all blown away," he says.

Arman adds that besides being a wonderful personality and genius actor, Til Schweiger is also a man of his word; if he decides something, he will go for it.

"We will start with the first project, then we'll work on the TV series. I guess that, most likely, we will start our shootings in winter," he says.

Arman is working on his own projects, too. He says, "Of course, the films which I direct and produce are very important to me, but I also think it's important to make good collaborations. It's vital not only for myself, but, first of all, for our country. We need such professionals like Til, who can observe Armenia and see that it's not only a beautiful country, but also a very appropriate place for making films. Our aim is to develop the Armenian film industry to an international level. We just need to take the right steps. I'm also thankful to the National Cinema Center of Armenia for the support, and to my lovely colleagues; one of them Ani Vorskanyan, with her Ava production."
