The legendary Tina Turner has passed away. The rock 'n' roll star, who became a giant of pop music in the 1980s, passed away at age 83 after a long illness.
She has had health problems in recent years: she was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2016 and had a kidney transplant in 2017.
Turner reinforced the formative role of black women in rock 'n' roll, defining that era of music to the point that Mick Jagger admitted to drawing inspiration from her energetic live performances for his stage persona. After two decades with her husband Ike Turner, she chose a solo career and after several false starts became one of the icons of 1980s pop music with the album Private Dancer.
Her life has been described in three memoirs, a biographical film, and, in 2021, the acclaimed documentary Tina.
"Tina Turner, the 'Queen of Rock 'n' Roll,' passed away peacefully today at age 83 after a long illness at her home in Cusnacht near Zurich. With her, the world has lost a musical legend and role model," said a statement from the star's spokesperson.
