Martin Scorsese to play Dante Alighieri's mentor in Julian Schnabel's upcoming film, ‘In the Hands of Dante’

11:10, February 21

Martin Scorsese will soon be seen on the big screen. The world-famous filmmaker will try his hand at acting in a small but impressive role—playing an elderly sage who influences Dante Alighieri while he writes The Divine Comedy in Julian Schnabel’s upcoming crime mystery, In the Hands of Dante, Variety reports.

Although Scorsese has appeared in many of his own movies and occasionally in those by other directors—he played Vincent van Gogh in Akira Kurosawa's 1990 film Dreams, and voiced a fugue loan shark in Shark Tale—this role is likely to be one of the most significant for him.

“He’s extraordinary in this film,” Schnabel told Variety, calling Scorsese’s performance “brilliant and important.” “You can’t take your eyes off him.”

In the Hands of Dante features a stellar cast that includes Oscar Isaac, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, Gerard Butler, and Al Pacino. It is based on the book of the same name by Nick Tosches, which is based on the handwritten manuscript of Dante Alighieri's poem The Divine Comedy, which is in the Vatican Library. The poem makes its way from a priest to a mob boss in New York, where Tosches picks it up after being asked to check its authenticity. Then, like Dante, Tosches goes on his own journey.
