ArmenՅԱՆs: Armenian designer Khosrov on his “tree dress” which hit the Grammy’s red carpet, his roots and inspirations

12:08, February 23

By Syune Arakelyan

The name of the Armenian designer Khosrov Melkonyan became more popular after this year’s Grammy awards, when singer Dawn Richard demonstrated his extraordinary design of a “tree” dress on the red carpet. Later her gown would be named one of the most “daring” looks of the evening.

Being born and raised in Los Angeles, Khosrov Melkonyan has always been tightly linked to his Armenian roots, which have always inspired him in creating his designs. He began his journey working with Rodarté. Later on he moved to UK to complete his degree at the London College of Fashion. There he has worked with Gareth Pugh, Nick Knight and KTZ.

Khosrov revealed more about his roots, inspirations and fashion journey in his interview for “ArmenՅԱՆs”/Armenians/ by NEWS.am STYLE.

Khosrov, being born and raised in Los Angeles, you are boldly linked to your Armenian roots, which as you describe, you put in your designs as well. How did you manage to keep Armenia inside your heart?

As with most any diaspora, the culture is drilled into us from a young age. I think the importance to share our rich history came about a few years ago and I felt compelled to weave inspirations throughout the collections; whether in subtle or obvious manners.

Since when has fashion become the inseparable part of your life?

I think it's always been inseparable. I recall being obsessed with celebrity culture as a kid and the different styles. Eventually around 13/14 I decided I would embark on this journey.KHOSROV-502.jpg (154 KB)

Who were your inspirations?

Inspirations have come from many sources. As far as fashion designers go, I would say the likes of Lee McQueen, Galliano, YSL, Cristobal Balenciaga, all of the greats really have shaped my work in some way.

Who are your parents? Have they had any effect on your fashion career?

My parents have for sure had an effect on my work. I think my mother's work ethic has thoroughly rubbed off on me, while my father's art background and teachings have aided immensely.

How the brand Khosrov was created?

The brand was created simply during covid. I wish there was a more glamorous answer, but much like many other creatives and people during the time, I took inventory of where I was at and where I was going in terms of career and this felt like the natural step forward.

I’ve noticed that the majority of your designs are made in red color. What does red symbolize for you?

Well, the red really was the final installment of the first three major collections. I started with blue, then orange and ended with red. This symbolizes our flag and pays respects to our cultural identity without being so cheesy and predictable.

Your recent gown “tree”, worn by Dawn Richard was a real success after the Grammys. When creating it, did you imagine it’s going to be on Grammy one day?

I would be lying if I said I didn't expect something. Although having gotten these milestones, not only as a creative but a brand, I've always kept my delusions about, but each day they move less from delusions and into reality. Of course the dress was not made with the Grammys in mind specifically, and I am so grateful to have been on the red carpet, but if you're not working with intention, (given the right context), what's the point? It was a very surreal experience though. Having grown up glued to the TV and the red carpet coverages, to then actually having something of mine walk the carpet was a beautiful 360. I am very moved and proud to have been included.

How did your collaboration with Dawn Richard happen?

Dawn's stylist simply messaged my PR agency and we made some magic happen.

Dawn herself has described the dress as a symbol of her growth in the music industry. What does it symbolize for you?

I think the dress really is a symbol of what could be done when you not only do something out of love and dedication, but when you have the right team around you, you can really fly to new heights. I can very proudly say that I did not make that dress. One of my longest and dearest friends, Suzanna Poghosyan, really was the brains behind the engineering. Yes, I came up with the idea, sketches, proportions and general qualities, but it took having people who equally care for the work to fully realise it. My couture girls, Donatella and Lucia in Bologna, helped greatly in the finishings and taking the dress to an elegant space. It took a village and it makes me so happy to see them so proud. All of this to say, the amount in which you water something and with intention, truly helps shape the meaning and the journey to get to the end.

Your gown was named one of the "daring" looks of the red carpet. Did you expect it to be as such?

Honestly, not really. I always remember the Grammys to be the award show that allowed for some more out there looks. I was shocked to see how boring it's become in terms of red carpet dressing, growing up it was always the weirder red carpet in comparison to, for example the Oscars or Emmy, etc. Lest we forget, Lady Gaga came in an egg. Or her Armani Prive space dress, complete with rings circling around her like Saturn. There was Cardi B, displayed as a Mugler siren in one of her archival dresses. There have been so many iconic moments at the Grammys red carpet, and I'm happy to have been able to now be included in them.

Are there any other celebrities you would like to see in your looks?

I would love to dress Cate Blanchette, Zendaya, Kali Uchis, Cardi B, Kim Kardashian, Hunter Schaffer, the list can go on honestly.

Khosrov, have you ever been to Armenia?

I have indeed been to Armenia. I went in 2017, for one month with about 15 friends. We all had different apartments around the city we stayed in and it was such a great experience to have had together. I recall firstly how hot it was. I was shocked about that. But secondly, it was no myth about how hospitable everyone was. I loved discovering the underground youth cultures there and the music scene. The food was of course incredible and the natural landscapes were like a dream.

Do you plan to visit in the near future?

Every year I say I will be going but work dictates otherwise. So although I would love to visit sooner than later, it really depends on where the brand takes me.

Where do you live and work now?

I am currently living and working between Los Angeles and Florence, Italy.

What are you working on in the present moment?

I am working on the new Spring/Summer 2025 collection that will drop in late September of this year. I look forward to sharing the development and all the great, new styles we have planned.
