American actor and comedian Richard Lewis, whose self-deprecating humor and biting wit in shows such as Curb Your Enthusiasm and Everything But Love entertained audiences for decades, has died. He was 76.
The artist died "peacefully" at his home in Los Angeles on Tuesday night after suffering a heart attack, his publicist Jeff Abraham said. In April 2023, Lewis revealed that he had Parkinson's disease.
He first appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson in 1974, becoming a staple of the comedy scene. On screen, Lewis played himself for years in Curb Your Enthusiasm alongside his friend Larry David.
In the 1980s, as his television career blossomed, Lewis moved also into acting roles, starring opposite Jamie Lee Curtis in the sitcom Everything But Love, playing Prince John in the Mel Brooks comedy Robin Hood: Men in Tights, and in the 1995 drama Drunkards.
