An ultra-rare Rolex Split-Seconds (Ref. 4113) was sold for a record $3.5 million at a Monaco Legend Group auction.
This watch, introduced in 1942, is one of 12 such models made in the early 1940s. According to the auction house, the watch was originally intended for aviation pilots, but found its niche in the Italian automotive world. They were never offered for commercial sale and were reportedly given exclusively to members of certain racing teams. Thus, this model is considered one of the rarest and most expensive Rolexes.
There are only nine Spit-Seconds in existence, and very few of them are in excellent condition. The previous record holder was sold at a Phillips auction in Geneva in 2016 for $2.6 million. Another example at auction in 2019 reached just over $2 million, writes Robb Report.
