Al Capone's pistol up for auction, with starting price of $500,000

22:22, April 30

A pistol that belonged to notorious gangster Al Capone is up for auction—and with a starting price of $500,000.

According to Richmond Auctions, the Colt 1911.45 ACPT semi-automatic pistol was owned by Capone, who affectionately called the weapon "Sweetheart" after using it to save his life several times. Richmond Auctions estimates the final auction price to be between $2 million and $3 million.

The gun was inherited by Capone's wife, Mae, at the time of his death and remained in the possession of the Capone family for almost 75 years. Mae carefully stored the firearm and passed it on to their only child, Sonny Capone.

Sonny upgraded the gun to improve its speed and accuracy. The pistol includes a Micro barrel bushing, spring plug, fixed front sight, and adjustable rear sight.

Sonny passed away in 2004 and the gun was passed on to his daughters, Diana and Barbara. The Certificate of Authenticity was signed and dated April 2024 by Diana Capone Pett, granddaughter of Al Capone. Photos taken at the time of signing will also be provided to the buyer.
