Madonna makes history by bringing together 1.6 million fans in her final concert in Rio

10:59, May 6

Madonna has ended her tour with a free concert on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro—and in front of 1.6 million fans.

It was the final night of her retrospective tour, celebrating her four decades in pop music, which she has been touring around the world since last October.

Madonna kicked off her show with her 1998 song “Nothing Really Matters,” and performed many of her hits including “Like a Virgin,” “Hung Up,” and “Like a Prayer.” She was joined on stage also by Brazilian artists Anitta and Pabilo Vittar.

Rio's tourism agency said 1.6 million people attended the concert on the city's famous beach, which has hosted large events in the past. The Rolling Stones had performed there in front of 1.2 million fans in 2006, and Rod Stewart gave the biggest free rock concert in history there in 1994, bringing together 4 million people.

The previous largest audience for a Madonna live concert was 130,000 fans in Paris in 1987.
