Melinda French Gates speaks candidly about divorce from Bill Gates

15:31, June 19

Melinda French Gates has spoken candidly about her divorce from ex-husband Bill Gates after 27 years of marriage.

In an interview with Time, she admitted that "divorce is a terrible thing." “It just hurts. It's terrible when you realize you need him,” she said, before correcting herself by clarifying that divorce is a “hard thing,” not a “terrible thing.”

Melinda French Gates admitted that she was grateful that the breakup was not public. This happened during the Covid pandemic. “It gave us the opportunity to do things that needed to be done privately,” she said. “You know, I broke up before I made the final decision about divorce.”

Asked if she was concerned about how the divorce would affect her and her husband's private charity, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Melinda noted that the divorce was ultimately "more of a personal matter." However, she noted that at that time she was still thinking about both her organization and the children. "I've been thinking a lot about my three children," she said. “But I certainly thought about the impact on the fund. And I wanted to make sure that when we got to the other side, all those pieces were still intact.”

Melinda French Gates, who announced her exit from the foundation last month, also spoke candidly about how she's doing well now, despite how difficult her divorce was.

Melinda noted that she is now happy in her own space, noting that she lives close to many of her friends.
